Ho Chi Minh City New Ward Names: Old Districts 1, 2, 7, 10 Explained
Since July 1, 2025, Vietnam's local government has had two tiers, so Ho Chi Minh City's districts (Quận) are gone and only wards (Phường) remain. Here is what the former Districts 1, 2, 7, and 10 are now called, how far map apps have caught up, and the 9 GayoGayo stores listed by old district and new ward.
Why did "District 1" and "District 7" disappear from maps of Ho Chi Minh City?
Because on July 1, 2025, Vietnam's local government switched to a two-tier system of provinces (cities) and wards (communes). In June 2025 the National Assembly amended the constitution and passed a new Law on Organization of Local Government, abolishing the district level (quận, huyện) nationwide, and names like "Quận 1" and "Quận 7" were dropped from official addresses in Ho Chi Minh City. On the same day, Ho Chi Minh City merged with the neighboring provinces of Bình Dương and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu to form a larger Ho Chi Minh City, and the number of province-level units nationwide fell from 63 to 34.
The new Ho Chi Minh City consists of 113 wards (phường), 54 communes (xã), and 1 special zone (Côn Đảo). The old downtown districts that travelers visit were grouped into a few large wards. Street names and buildings are unchanged; the only thing that changed is the "district" line of the address.
What ward is the former District 1 now?
The former District 1 became four wards. Two of them matter to travelers.
- Bến Thành Ward (Phường Bến Thành): all of the old Bến Thành and Phạm Ngũ Lão wards plus parts of the old Cầu Ông Lãnh and Nguyễn Thái Bình wards. Bến Thành Market, the Independence Palace, and the Bùi Viện backpacker street are all in this ward. Its eastern boundary is Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa street.
- Sài Gòn Ward (Phường Sài Gòn): centered on the old Bến Nghé ward, it includes the main commercial streets such as Nguyễn Huệ walking street, Đồng Khởi, Lê Lợi, and Hàm Nghi. The former District 1 stretch of Pasteur street is also east of Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa, so it is listed under Sài Gòn Ward.
- The other two are Tân Định Ward and Cầu Ông Lãnh Ward.
What happened to Phú Mỹ Hưng (District 7), An Phú (District 2), and District 10?
- Former District 7 → four wards: Tân Thuận, Phú Thuận, Tân Mỹ, and Tân Hưng. The Phú Mỹ Hưng new urban area straddles two wards: the northern part where Korean restaurants and shops cluster (the former Tân Phong Ward) is now Tân Hưng Ward, and the southern part with Crescent Mall and Crescent Lake (the former Tân Phú Ward) is now Tân Mỹ Ward. Crescent Mall's official address is in Tân Mỹ Ward; SC VivoCity is in Tân Hưng Ward.
- Former District 2, An Phú (Thủ Đức City) → the old An Phú ward was split in two: part became An Khánh and part became Bình Trưng. Thảo Điền is in An Khánh Ward.
- Former District 10 → three wards: Diên Hồng, Vườn Lài, and Hòa Hưng.
Do map apps and Grab show the new addresses yet?
They are still catching up. Google Maps began rolling out the new province and ward boundaries in March 2026, but individual address search results sometimes still show the old district names alongside. Apple Maps has supported searching by both old and new names since late April 2026. Ride-hailing apps like Grab have issued no official guidance, so setting your destination by the map pin rather than the address text is the most reliable approach. The map button on GayoGayo store pages opens by coordinates, so it keeps working even though the names have changed.
